I self publish about 70% of the time. The times I do submit to Publications, I use Pubs that I also read and are specific to my writing.
Better Programming has been amazing for my stories about learning to code. Codex is good for all things tech. Python in Plain English is where I publish technical/tutorials. And Fuck Niches is awesome and fun because they encourage you to say what you want, how you want and Jason (Editor) consistently publishes articles that make me think. And The Shadow is one I’ve used for my stories about addiction, recovery, and life.
I’ve also published with The Startup which is the biggest Publication on Medium (now called Start It Up), and while they do have an amazing team of editors who make my articles shine, I just haven’t seen very much success with them. Plus I don’t feel like I’m a part of something with them either like I do with the previously mentioned publications. I assume it’s because they’re so big, but I can’t say for sure.
Aside from Better Programming, those that I publish to are fairly small which is exactly what I hope this encourages. More engagement with small publications. And more small publications reaching out to writers who’ve self published.
Because that happens too. You self publish, it does pretty good, then a publication leaves a note asking if you want to publish with them and you’ve found a new connection.
I like this, because it feels really nice for someone to say, "Hey, really good stuff here. We want you to be part of what we’re doing.". I hope more of that happens for writers.
