Embracing failure together; no more excuse labels

2020 shook the world up and dropped us in 2021 with much different expectations and aspirations than we had in 2019. Because of this sudden shift in reality, we’ve coined a trendy new word; new-normal.

But there never was a normal to begin with. We’re all terrible people with messy lives. Each day can range from a literal dumpster fire to winning millions of dollars. Why do we feel the need to define life and label it normal.

When I think of being normal, I think of restrictions and expectations I must adhere to. I’m not taking risks or pushing boundaries if I’m normal. I’m not reaching for my dreams or learning from my failures either.

Corporations seem to be the only entity benefiting from normalcy. If they can continue to predict how people live and what they want, they can continue to meet financial expectations.

This idea of normalcy could also contribute to social anxiety and depression. If someone thinks they’re different because they don’t fit into the common understanding of normal, they might think something is wrong with them.

The truth is, there’s something wrong with all of us. Some of us just hide it better.

The Pandemic didn’t bring a new normal. It revealed everything that was being kept out of site. All those people who’ve been hiding things so well for so long, suddenly found themselves just as anxiety ridden and depressed as the rest of us.

Instead of admitting this and moving on together as a communally messed up society, we’re led to believe there is a new normal to once again strive for. Well, this new normal they’re peddling sure looks a lot like the old normal.

Our society is made of dynamic individuals who change over time. What’s happening in our lives today might be completely different in a year. Good things may spawn change, but bad things also shape our lives. We simply cannot fit into any version of normal. We need to stop pursuing these labels when life becomes uncomfortable or confusing.

Life will always be uncomfortable and confusing.
How we deal with it is what defines us.
